The very use of the term "Piraterie" as a metaphor has its borders
when fighting against intellectual property. One border is between
Europe and Africa, or better between Spain and Morocco and to put in
the exact place between Tarifa and Tangiers. On the 15 kilometers wide
Straits between the most southern point of European mainland - which
for Antiques applied as the end of the world and got its name due to
Pirates, which already put up a flatrate on person and goods traffic a
thousand years ago - and the northern coast of Morocco are crossing
more than only culture industry interests of its former customers or
the Ascii-Art-Bones of the Pirate Cinema Logos: the boats of illegal
migrants with the surfboards of touristic hordes; the cliffs of the
Nomadism-Romance with risks of navigation to be faced in reality;
boats of the Spanish border police with the swarms of tanks by the
world economics trade; official as well as unofficial communication
channels with the developing systems of surveillance; the remainders
of the Spanish Empire with the British regime of colonialism; the
European constitution with the constitution of its inhabitants and
finally not to forget the Atlantic waves with the currents of the
Mediterranean Sea - and the ghost of terrorism, the spirit of Europe
and the fog of Biometrie is on top of it all.
"stop driving me away/I just wanna stay" sings Madonna in
"borderline", and this might contain everything, that is to say about
the European foreign and security politics, due to every year more
people are killed than crosses would fit on the Berlin death stripe.
But, according to Madonna, the Borderline gives you the feeling of
losing control, not only because of the insanity by that line, which
was drawn crosswise through the Mediterranean Sea by Europe. Having a
look on it's obvious the Borderline itself is fractal, encloses
stations, football stadiums and shopping centers, serves as a testing
project of digital detection and filter systems that gives a first
impresion on the frights and joys, waiting for us in the newly
arranged spaces of control companies. Futher more the Borderline is a
syndrome, the insanity of Europe, which outlines blur - instead of
recognizing that it reaches from the 2nd Avenue to Wladiwostok, or to
realize the fact that from Pekings, Delhis or Dubais point of view,
it's the periphery amongst others - it persits on its old geographical
and cultural, anti-western like anti-eastern, central perspective
obsessions: Fortress Europe, childrens instead of Indians, we are the
Turks from tomorrow.
From the 19th to 26th of June Pirate Cinema Berlin follows an
invitation of the Borderline Academy (www.borderlineacademy.org) as
well as the promise, which is to find in the Arab word "through the
space", "space Ship" and "satellite tv" (www.fadaiat.net) and we hope
that some of you will follow our invitation (www.airberlin.com,
Berlin-Malaga, starts by 200 euro). Our program will differ from what
we usually organise each Sunday. We do plan Screenings (surely more
than only two), but we will aslo be on our way with a research and
development project, that includes production and distribution of
moved pictures, data acquisition and exchange, mapping of borders of
European cinema and studies for effects, which the Mediterranean and
Atlantic Sea have on the well-being of their established as well as on
the travelling neighbours. Also not to work, is what we planed on
doing. Because the abolishment of intellectual property, as our main
project, is only one of three things to get rid of and without the
other two - borders and labor - the one doesn't make much sense. Only
if people can move freely without papers and are properly honored for
their permanent productivity (which cannot be counted in work ever
again) at the same time, only then they will truely enjoy the acquired
production and distribution means.
